Transportation Workers Identification Credentials for Truckers
Truckers pick up cargo in ports around the country soon for a new card to carry. The Transport Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is mandatory for all regulated persons unescorted access to secure areas of Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) facilities. That is, you need TWIC smart card to get into the sea ports around the country.
A TWIC, you must biographical and biometric data like fingerprints,sit for a digital photograph and successfully pass a security threat assessment (background check) by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) implemented. If you already have your hazardous materials endorsement on your CDL, you check the background was already considered dangerous for your approval. You should check any further background information. This will take you to qualify for a reduced registration fee.
Which brings us to the costs for drivers. You have to pay $ 132.50 to get your TWICSmart Card. If you already have a qualified background check (background check for your dangerous goods note), you pay only $ 105.25. The card is valid to check for 5 years from the date of the background. Meaning, if you already have a dangerous goods approved, the card is valid for five years from the time your took the background check. If you do not already have their hazmat endorsement, the card is valid to check for 5 years from the date of the TWIC background. The TSA is proposing thatDrivers who had carried out a qualified background check within the 12 months before the application to their TWIC pay the reduced fee. If your background check was more than 12 moths ago, they propose to pay the full $ 132.50, so you have full 5 years have to be redone.
You have to deal with Visa / Mastercard, money order or check payable to-pay Lockheed Martin.
And do not loose your login information. A replacement card costs $ 60.
The smart card isbe issued by the TSA. It is the holder's photo and fingerprint, and a small computer chip in a tamper-proof ID card. All truck drivers who need access to ports, their TWIC will be held until September 2008. Registration is abolished throughout the country to ensure a smooth transition. Registration stared back on 16 October for the Port of Delaware. Ports that are already active registration, the ports of Delaware, Corpus Christi (TX), Baton Rouge (LA), Honolulu (HI), Tacoma(WA), Beaumont (TX), Oakland (CA), Houston (TX), Providence (RI), Chicago / Calumet (IL), Port Arthur (Texas), Savannah (GA), Dundalk / Baltimore (MD), Lake Charles (LA), Minneapolis (MN), St. Paul (MN).
TWIC is coming soon in the ports of:
Charleston (SC) - 28 November
Cleveland (OH), Detroit (MI), Port Fourchon (LA) - 29 November
Boston (MA) - 30 November
Brownsville (Texas), Mobile (AL) - 5th December
Brunswick (GA), Milwaukee (WI) - December12.
Philadelphia (PA) - 13 December
Besides truckers, port employees, merchant mariners and port workers must have TWIC cards. The TSA estimates that a million people are the credentials of the time the program goes into effect have.
