Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES)

Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) is a rare but serious condition caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal and a compression of the nerve roots below the spinal cord. Symptoms of CES include pain, reduced sensation and decreased muscle strength and, if left untreated, can result in leg paralysis and loss of bladder and bowel function.

Causes of Cauda Equina Syndrome
Causes of CES include a herniated or ruptured disk in the lower back, a traumatic event such as a fall or blow from behind, or such things as a tumor or infection or even a medical mistake.
Were you injured at work?

CES can be caused by and made worse from repetitive lifting of heavy objects or improper lifting or other types of physical work. It can also be caused by a back trauma, such as being hit in the back by heavy machinery or falling from scaffolding. These types of work related injuries that can cause CES may result in an Illinois work injury claim.

Were you injured in another manner?
Other trauma can also cause CES, such as a car accident or a knife or gunshot wound. If you were injured in some way that you believe caused your CES, you may have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit, depending on the facts and circumstances.

Were you the victim of a medical mistake?
Errors that happen during surgery or other medical treatment that can lead to CES include positioning screws or instruments in the spine, thereby compressing or injuring the nerves.
Another error such as prolonged periods of spinal aesthesia during surgery or labor can lead to CES. Also, having a spinal tap if you are on blood thinning medication can cause the blood to coagulate, compressing nerves and causing CES.

If you believe that you have been the victim of a medical mistake or that you have been misdiagnosed or not treated in a timely manner, you may have a medical malpractice claim.

Symptoms of Cauda Equina Syndrome
The most common symptom is lower back pain, where the pain originates in the buttocks and travels down one or both legs and likely producing a sharp pain. Other common symptoms include reduced sensation in the legs and groin area along with urination and bowel trouble or incontinence. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention to prevent any further complications.

Diagnosis of Cauda Equina Syndrome
CES is diagnosed by a medical history review along with certain tests, including x-rays, MRI and strength and sensation testing. Your physician should rule out other possible conditions such as a herniated disk or a urinary tract infection.

Treatment of Cauda Equina Syndrome
Anti-inflammatory drugs work well on some people with CES. However, surgery is the most common treatment for CES and, unfortunately, it is not always successful. The sooner you reach out to a doctor, the better. Loss of sensation in the groin area and urinary and bowel incontinence may require emergency surgery in order to prevent permanent nerve damage.

Choosing to File a Lawsuit; Choosing an Attorney; Costs of an Attorney
The most important thing is that you seek medical attention in a timely manner and follow your doctor's orders. Time is of the essence in treating CES. However, there are also time limits - or statutes of limitations - when filing a lawsuit in Illinois. Depending on your case - work related injury, personal injury, medical malpractice - the time to file will expire at some point.

It is essential that you choose an attorney that best suits your case. No matter what caused your CES, your attorney should have handled numerous back injury cases similar to yours. After we hear the facts of your case, we can recommend the right attorney for you in your area.

If you are concerned about paying for an attorney, keep in mind that attorneys who handle these types of cases do so on a contingency basis. You pay nothing out of pocket. If you win, your attorney gets paid from that recovery amount. If you get nothing, your lawyer gets nothing.
